How To Wear An Aviator Scarf and Motorcycle Scarves
The aviator – motorcycle scarf first began to be worn as a practical clothing item, but it quickly became a fashion statement as well. Today, these scarves are still worn in the tradition of the aviators and motorcyclists who first used them. They are also commonly worn purely to add a touch of style to any ensemble.
Historically, aviator scarves are made of silk or a similar fabric. They are also typically white in color, up to a foot wide, and up to six feet long. The type of fabric and the dimensions of the scarves were originally chosen for very practical purposes.
Since aircraft were once commonly open to the air, pilots needed to wear a lot of protective clothing. Leather jackets were usually worn, but cold air could still slip right in at the neck. Scarves took care of this problem, but they needed to be made of a smooth fabric to prevent chafing from the jacket. They also needed to be very long, in order to be wrapped around the neck multiple times.
Motorcyclists today use these versatile scarves in much the same way… for the same reasons.
Today, these scarves are still as functional as they are fashionable. While most airplanes are now covered, pilots of vintage aircraft might still find such a scarf quite useful. Bikers can certainly still use them.
Whether wearing it for function or for looks, the aviator scarf can look fantastic with many types of clothing. The classic look pairs these scarves with a brown or black leather jacket and sunglasses. It also goes fantastically well with a suit jacket. It’s a great choice to pair with a tuxedo, or for any dressy event. It can even be worn casually by women, or more creatively, as a belt.
Such a versatile clothing item should not be missing from any closet. These scarves combine the best of both style and function. They seem unlikely to ever go out of style.
