How can I find out what fabric my shirt is?
Hi, I bought a cool shirt at a second-hand store that I want to shrink (it’s too big). But in order to do that I need to know what fabric it is, and it doesn’t say on the tag on the shirt. All it says is: machine wash: warm & gentle cycle. Do not use bleach. Drip dry & press with cool iron.
My guess is that it’s 100% polyester? It’s a colorful shirt with cheesy fabric, probably made in the 80′s. The company is Countess Mara: The Wardrobe for Men. It also says ‘Imported Fabric’ on the little strip you can use to hang it up (whatever that’s called). Sorry for the stupid question, I don’t know anything about clothes.
If there’s no fiber content tag, then the two choices you have left are to ask someone who sews a lot if they can make a guess from the hand of the fabric, or do some destructive testing, which I’d guess you probably don’t want to do. Burn testing would be one of the first tests to try.
My guess, with that label, is that it’s got some nylon in it — nylon yellows in chlorine bleach, and is quite temperature-sensitive in comparison with polyester. But it may be cotton or rayon or acetate that also spawned the “do not bleach” instruction.
