How to Prevent Skin Discolorations
The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It performs the following functions – protection, sensation, heat regulation, absorption and water resistance. Because the skin covers almost every part of the body and protects it against pathogens, it is prone to a variety of health problems. One of these is skin discolorations which are harmless but nevertheless annoying to those who have them.
Skin discolorations like freckles, age spots and pregnancy marks are skin problems that can affect people of all ages. Freckles, which are small brown patches, appear early in life while pregnancy marks or melasma appear during pregnancy as a result of hormonal changes. Age spots, meanwhile, are like freckles and appear later in life. They can also occur in any skin type. These brown patches are formed in areas on the skin that are exposed to the sun. Examples of these are the face, the hands, the chest and the back. Freckles, age spots and pregnancy marks are caused by the accumulation of the skin pigment called melanin, which is produced by the body as a result of sun exposure.
How can discolorations be prevented? For those who are always exposed to the sun, the best thing to do is to put on sunscreens. This will lessen sun exposure, thus preventing the body from producing extra melanin. Natural remedies are also available for the prevention of discolorations. Washing one’s face using sour milk, for example, provides gentle peeling while the use of lemon juice is a proven remedy against freckles. Fruit and vegetable masks are also recommended while parsley juice mixed with lemon, orange and red currant juice helps keep freckles invisible. Perhaps one of the most important preventive measures for discolorations is increased intake of Vitamin C as it makes the skin less sensitive to the sun. Foods rich in Vitamin C include citrus fruits, green onions, currants and rosehip tea.
People with skin discolorations should take note of the fact that some types of discolorations are due to underlying medical problems such as lupus and liver disease. Otherwise they should accept the fact that discolorations are part of life. However, there is nothing wrong with wanting to have skin that is clear and silky smooth. Prevention is still better than cure, and staying away from the sun is the best preventive measure one can do to avoid discolorations of any kind.
