Endangered Species

Helping preserve endangered species

It is very important to preserve these species, for the diversity and survival of the biosphere. There are many conservationists in the world, but not enough, that try to find and execute different ways of protecting endangered animals or plants. Of course, anyone can try to help, there are many already established ways of aiding species that are threatened. For instance, one can obtain new information about some certain group where sufficient data is missing or hasn’t even been tried to get it. This is important for understanding the factors that affect some species, what are the weak against (exp. change of temperature in the climate can harm some plants). Once we know what induces the endangerment, you could start coming up with a solution for it, which is most often the hardest thing to do.

Another important aspect of helping preserve threatened species is through national agency investments and protection laws issued by the national government. Donating money to organizations that make their primary goal preservation of different species is a worthy cause and way to help, but without the help of the government they are unable to do anything. Acknowledgment of the government that the problems of some species are real and need to be dealt with are crucial for the success in preserving these species. Ecologists often give propositions to the authorities to make biological corridors and biosphere reserves, take more care in the management of the ecosystem. For example, when planning construction of different facilities to take into consideration the ecosphere on that area, and integrate it to the plans without disturbing, or worse, destroying it. An example of a national conservation zone is the Northwest Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, which is the largest marine protected area in the world. It has prohibitions such as no fishing restriction except for the people who work there, no corals can be removed and the violators can be tracked via satellite, and severely punished. Most of the species there cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The last method that can be used to help endangered species is informing the society. Giving the people important information about conserving these species can create a feeling of obligation in the society and it can be become much more dedicated to ecological ethics. This can be done through different courses, training programs and regular gatherings that can attract people with fun and educational content. People often think if other people don’t care, why should they? But that is a completely misguided way of thinking, because even one person can make a huge difference for the environment, which is very fragile and can use all the help it can get.

Another way of saving and repopulating rare or threatened species is through captive breeding, which is done in controlled conditions and settings, like preservations or zoos. This way the population of the species no doubt increases, although not outside in the wild. The problem with captive breeding arises when the species are highly mobile and migrate a lot, such as some birds or fish, or when the population is too small which can lead to weakening the immunity system of the species to diseases.
