Straw hats were designed to protect the head against heatstroke but today it is often used in fashion and as a decorative element of a uniform. A straw hat is a brimmed hat that is made of straws or reeds. Believe it or not, men from Europe and then Asia started using straw hats as a headgear for their uniform. The first one is known as a Panama hat and mostly woven in Ecuador. Panama hat was given its name because of the place of origin which is in Panama. Compare to the other type of straw tops, the Panama hat is considered to be the prince of straw hats and worn by other great names such as Napolean III and Edward VII.
Another popular straw hat will be the conical Asian hat. It is originated from South East Asia and the headgear is shaped like a con and it is kept on the head by a cloth chin strap. It is mainly used as a protection from the sun and the rain. Sometimes the wearer dips the hat into the water and wears it again as an impromptu evaporative cooling device.
Thirdly, another famous straw top will be the boater hat or sometimes also known as the basher, skimmer, cady, Katie or sennit hat. This type of hat is mainly made of sennit straw and has a stiff brim usually with a ribbon around the crown which symbolizes the organization. The boater top is fairly formal hat and can be seen often with a blazer, smart lounge suit or with a black tie. Today, this type of headgear has become part of the school uniforms in many boys school especially in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
