With multiple regressions, is it possible for R-Squared to equal 100%?
I used five variables in a multiple regression and the r-squared equals 100%. Is it possible for r-squared to equal 100%? In addition, the single regressions for the five variables are as follows: 1.2%, 6.2%, 33.0%, 25.00%, and 3.3%.
I will award max points for best (and correct) answer.
Including error, but that is not the way multiple regression is interpreted. What is the percentage of variance in your dependent variable accounted for by your independent variables? It is also important in multiple regression to test for non-linear relationships by multiplying each variable with the others:
Variable A * Variable B, Variable A * Variable B* Variable C , Variable A* Variable B* Variable C* times Variable D. Then you test to see whether dropping certain variables or combinations of variables makes a significant difference.
You want to simplify the equation as much as possible, and weed out the irrelevant variables. In this case, I would assume that those variable below 4% are inconsequential unless they make a significant impact on quadratic etc. equations.
But please discuss these analyses with your professor. Multiple regression is definitely the best method of interpreting data, because it takes into account the effect of cross-correlations. I’m sure you know that the only way you can get an R-squared of 100% between two variables is if the correlation equals 1.0 — which does not happen in the social sciences.
