Harajuku Tokyo

Yoyogi Park
Yoyogi Park is located in the center of Tokyo near Harajuku and the famous Meiji Shrine. Actually, if you want to plan a day out in Tokyo that incorporates history, greenery, shopping, and fashion, this is a great option. Yoyogi Park is a famous hang out at the weekends for Tokyoites with many joggers, musicians, footballers, frisbee throwers and more choosing their own patch of green to relax and hang out with friends. Many festivals take place here, especially in summer, and there are food stalls outside the main gates so you can try some traditional Japanese street food when you get peckish. Take the Yamanote Line to Harajuku Station and then follow the masses heading out of the station. Take a moment to enjoy the variety of Tokyo fashion on display from the cosplayers who are always to be found here before heading into the park for some rest and relaxation.
Mount Takao
Just over an hour away from Tokyo on the Chuo or Keio Lines you will find Mount Takao. This is becoming an increasingly popular destination for day trips but, for the moment at least, it is a chance to get into the countryside and breathe some fresh air surrounded by some really beautiful nature. As the name suggests, this is a mountain, albeit a small one, but if you don’t fancy the walk there are cable cars and a chair lift that will take you to the top. On a clear day – the best season for this is winter – you get a really spectacular view of Mount Fuji from the top of Mount Takao. While yo make your way to the viewing areas, make sure to try some noodles or tempura at one of the small restaurants dotted along the pathways. It’s delicious!
Institute for Nature Study in Meguro
The Institute for Nature Study sounds more like an experiment than a green day out in Tokyo, however, this is an area of forest that has been preserved in the heart of city since 1949. It is an initiative that is supported by the National Science Museum in Tokyo and focuses on taking care of the environment and preserving habitats and species. There are various trails leading around the park for you to wander at your will. Take a packed lunch with you and sit down at one of the designated areas that can be found at various locations on the trails. To get here you need to make your way to Meguro Station on the Yamanote Line. The Institute is about a 7 minute from the East Exit of JR Meguro station.
Inokashira Park
On the west side of Tokyo is a town called Kichijoji. It has a slightly hippy feel to it and is a popular area for students to hang out. It also has a big park called Inokashira Park where you can see people doing their early morning exercises, taking their daily jog, or feeding the carp that live in the pond. If you visit at the end of March or beginning of April, the park is full of pink cherry blossom and people celebrating the beauty of these short lived flowers, usually with a few drinks in hand under the trees. This is an area of Tokyo with a character all of it’s own as well as some excellent less famous restaurants. Take the Inokashira Line from Shibuya station on the Yamanote Line and stay on to the final stop, Kichijoji.
Hamarikyu Onshi Teien – An Island Japanese Garden
Lastly, one of the oldest gardens in Tokyo, dating back to the days of the Shogun and feudal lords, is Hamarikyu Onshi Teien. The most popular way to get here is to take the Waterbus on the Sumida River from Asakusa and get off at Hamarikyu. The garden is basically an island as it is only accessible from the boat or by bridge. It is a chance to imagine what Tokyo was like in days gone by when Samurai and Ronan roamed the land.
