Vintage Handbags For The Party Season

1920′s Vintage Bags
1920′s fashion focused on elaborate detail. The traditional 1920′s vintage handbag is a classic handbag with a distinct oval shape and detailed embroidery or beading in the art noveau, flapper or art deco (20′s-30′s)styles that were in fashion at the time. Beading is always used on 1920′s handbags as the fashion of the 1920′s prefers a textured look. Put with a flapper dress and you will recreate that elegant 1920′s look.
1930′s Vintage Bags
The 30′s are symbolic of the screen stars and housewives, who had quite an impact upon fashion. Day and evening wear became part of the ‘glamorous’ life that housewives envisioned, and so did daytime and evening handbags. The 30′s saw handbags, such as the envelope clutch arrive in leather, crocodile, ostrich and snakeskin materials combined with metal clasps. A clutch in one of these shiny but tough fabrics goes wonderfully with a prom dress or tight 1930-40′s styled dress or outfit.
1940′s Vintage Bags
During the war years, fashion somewhat came to a halt. Handbags were still being designed, but were based still on the familiar rectangle or envelope shapes of the 1930′s. This however gave designers time to experiment with materials, including plastics, rubber and corduroy. Often not as delicate as or decorative as 1920′s handbags, the 40′s handbag is better used with more informal outfits.
1950′s/1960′s Vintage Bags
Italy made its name once again in the fashion world by introducing the classic leather bag. The firm leather bag or tote continued to be master of this decade due its versatility. It could be tanned or dyed to any colour you wanted, including bright vibrant colours which were popular at the beginning of the end of 50′s and beginning of the 1960′s. Handbags were prior to this point, used as solely as a fashion accessory, it was this decade that we have to thank for the idea of bigger practical handbags.
Handbags then continued to ‘wow’ the world, with PVC bags becoming the fashion must have to complete that ‘Mod’ look. The 60′s fashion scene was certainly not frightened of colour and glitter either, as bright handbags were manufactured for a variety of looks, including the ‘mod’ look and the hippy look. Vintage handbags from the 60′s are perfect accompaniment to floaty hippy dresses (such as maxi) and pencil skirts and dresses.
