Motorists Beware –‘Frost-Jacking’ Is On The Rise
With the recent cold weather, many motorists have been waking up to a frozen car this winter. De-icing your card might seem like a minor inconvenience, but the careless habits of some car owners could be putting them at risk of ‘frost-jacking’.
The term frost-jacking has appeared after a number of people have had their car stolen after leaving it unattended with the engine running, while they wait for the windscreen to clear.
Research from the price comparison site uSwitch.com found that as many as 42% of drivers leave their car unattended with the engine running when they’re de-icing it, with a very trusting 11% of those polled saying that the threat of this kind of car theft had never even crossed their minds. A further 8% said that they thought that because they only left the car for a short space of time there was no significant risk, and 16% said that they knew the risks and were concerned about the safety of their car, but still left it unattended while it was de-icing anyway.
The consequences of frost-jacking could be more severe than you might think – as well as the obvious inconvenience of losing your car, your car insurance provider probably won’t be very sympathetic if was stolen because you left your vehicle unattended with the engine running. If they refuse to pay the claim as a result, you could potentially be left without a car and with no way of paying for a new one.
The threat of car theft isn’t the only thing you should be concerned about when it comes to de-icing. Keeping your engine running while your car is stationary for what is judged to be an unacceptable period of time could mean you get an on-the-spot fine of up to £40 from the police under anti-pollution laws. Another thing that could get you into trouble is a lazy approach to de-icing. Some 45% of motorists admit that they have set off on a frosty morning without having 100% visibility – not only is this a danger to other road users, but it could also mean a fine of up to £1,000 for driving with restricted vision if you get caught. And even improvising with makeshift ice-scrapers like a credit card, CD case, kitchen utensil etc isn’t a great idea either – you could end up having to foot the bill for repairs if you damage your car while doing so. In short, it’s probably a better idea to be prepared – make sure you’re equipped with a proper ice-scraper and/or de-icer and get out of bed that little bit earlier so you’ve time to de-ice your car properly.
