Kid Leather Gloves
I’m a warm-weather girl, I admit it. I pretend to complain about the heat along with everyone else on the fifth-in-a-row 30-degree day, but secretly I’m in heaven. I love summer and I wish it were hot all year ’round. One thing about the heat I don’t love? Summer clothes. Oh sure, they’re cute and minimal and flowy, but I find it very hard to feel stylish in a pair of shorts and a tank top. There’s only so much you can do with flip-flops. Hair is always yanked into a ponytail because anything else falls flat or sticks to your neck. I mean, models are always glamming around in beach shots looking bronzed and gorgeous in their beaded bikinis, but in real life most of us are just sweaty and sucking our stomachs in.
So my one consolation when the days turn cooler is the return of fall clothing. I look forward to a little more coverage. I love jeans but wearing them when it’s hot feels basically the same as wrapping your legs tightly in plastic wrap. But ah, to have them back as a wardrobe staple. Of course they don’t fit quite as well as they did in the spring before margaritas became a lunch course and running sort of fell off the radar, but as least any unsightly bulges can be covered by – oh joy! – a loose sweater until the exercise program gets underway again.
And let’s talk about the return of actual shoes. Or boots. Or any other footwear that eliminates the need for bi-weekly pedicures. Sandals begone! Flip flops, farewell! Give me arch support or give me death! I am delirious with anticipation as I think about my brown, buttery soft leather knee boots just waiting in my closet for the first frost. And jackets! I have not worn a jacket since late May. It’s been a ridiculously gorgeous summer, hot and sunny nearly every day, but my jackets have suffered. Even the ones that look cute over a light summer dress have been unnecessary. A fall clothing staple, the jacket is waiting to resume its place in the lineup. Winter jackets are all about function, but fall jackets are all about style. I bought a light leather bomber last year that I am dying to put into circulation. And in France a couple of years ago I splurged on a brown leather swing coat, light as a feather with bracelet-length sleeves and wildly impractical. It’s gorgeous and I can’t wait to bust it out. I even wear it with elbow-length black gloves when I’m feeling cheeky. Imagine wearing long black leather gloves in July! The ability to rock those gloves alone is a good enough reason to embrace the fall.
Finally, let’s just give a little shout-out to the sweater. What says “fall” more than a cozy sweater? I have a thick, cream cable-knit number that begs to be worn as I run though the autumn leaves towards my beloved, preferably in slow motion. True, I’ve never done this, but the sweater makes it a real possibility. And cashmere is truly the textile of the gods. I will brave any sub-arctic chill if it gives me a reason to wear a cashmere sweater.
As the leaves turn and I pack away my bikinis, I do feel a pang for the loss of easy, breezy summer attire. But oh, glorious fall clothes. The best is yet to come.
