For 300 years, this magnificent Venetian Baroque church has guarded the entrance to the Grand Canal, its huge dome radiating proud splendor. Baldassare Longhead, the ar¬chitect, erected the massive oc¬tagonal structure on more than one million sunken oak pilings, each 12 feet long.

The Salute was built to thank the Virgin Mary for the end of a catastrophic plague in 1630 (see p. 19). Since 1670, Venice has been celebrating the Festa delia Salute on November 21; engineers build a bridge of boats over the Grand Canal, and most of the city walks across and up into the church. Its main doors open only on this holiday. Inside, in the sacristy to the left of the high altar, hangs Tintoretto’s great Marriage at Cana. A number of Titians, in¬cluding The Sacrifice of Abra¬ham, Cain and A bel and David and Goliath are to be found there as well.
Earlier this century, the Salute had a notice warning angels falling. But the masonry has since been repaired and the art work beautifully restored by the French, who have taken a spe¬cial interest in this beloved Venetian landmark.
Museo Correr To gain an overall impression of Venice past and present, there’s no easier or more in I teresting way than to spend a few hours in this remarkable museum. Commencing dra¬matically at the top of imperial ‘ stairs in the Napoleonic wing, , the Corer runs along two sides of the Piazza.
It offers a fascinating assortment of Venicianacrimson doges’ I robes, priceless old maps of the city (look for Jacopo d Barbari’s captivating wood engraving of Venice in 1500 near the entrance), election documents and vivid portraits of many doges, coins minted over the centuries, a memora¬bly musty library, spears and armour, naval cannon and models of galleys. On the up¬per level, an art gallery con¬tains delightful Carpaccio’s, Bellini’s and Lorenzo Lotto’s. The adjacent small museum of the Risorgimento illustrates Venice’s history since the fall of the republic.
The Correr has an extremely useful section for visitors: magnified color photographs of the city’s major attractions are displayed side by side with I paintings by the masters de¬picting the same scenes in past , centuries. It’s astonishing how little Venice has changed. The collection was left to the city in 1830 by Theodora Correr, a member of one of Venice’s oldest noble families.
For almost 300 years, until Napoleon ended the practice in 1797, the Jews of Venice were forced to live in this canal surrounded section of Cannaregio which gives its name to Jewish quarters all ‘over the world. Most experts believe ghetto comes from the verb gettare, to cast in metal, because of the district’s foun¬dries. Other possible origins are the old rabbinical word ghet (separation) and a Syrian word ghetto (congregation).
