The word Pashmina is derived from the Persian word. Under the rough outer coat of the goat is the soft pashmina. This is the wool clipped from the underbelly of goats native to the high, remote, and frigid regions of the Himalayas in Nepal, Tibet, and Central Asia.
Pashmina dates back to a really old time. At one time, it was only worn by royalty due to its expense. It has become a generational trade, as many ancestors of the current weavers performed the same task. Shawls and blankets woven from wool have been adored for centuries in the Far East. Throughout Asia, the Middle East, and even the west, it has been valued for hundreds of years. They are so incredibly fine; they are thinner than a piece of human hair measuring in at approximately 15 microns thick. Goats living in the cold Himalayas have a warm inner coat of hair called pashima. On average, one goat should be able to deliver 5 to 8 ounces of pashmina per year. To make one Pashmina shawl you need the wool from three goats. To make one shawl, it takes over 200 man hours of spinning, weaving, and dying.
