Some players are shoe-ins for the Baseball Hall of Fame; making huge waves in the League and then quickly being inducted. Jim Rice had a much different experience, fighting an uphill battle from left field into the Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in his final year of eligibility, 2009, the same year the Red Sox retired his number 14.
A career Red Sox player, Rice played from 1974-89. Amongst his accolades are a 1978 MVP title and 8 All Star League titles. Rice met Ty Cobb’s AL record two consecutive years of total base leads. Rice was the ninth Major League player in the league to accomplish that feat. He was the only player in league history to hit 39 or more home runs in three consecutive years. Rice was not just a power hitter, he was a power player. He had a.298 batting average, 382 home runs, 1,451 RBIs and 4,129 bases over career.
So why did this power hitter have such trouble proving his worth to the Baseball Writers Association of America? Some say that his stats, though impressive, are not strong enough when compared to other Hall of Famers. Many others believe that it has to do with the relationship Rice had with the voting body over his career. The relationship between Rice and journalists was always rocky; they felt he was curt (even rude) and he was uninterested in speaking ill of his teammates or any topic unrelated to the game. It’s commonly believed that the bad blood carried over into BWAA voting. In 2009 he received 412 votes, only slightly above the 405 required for induction.
Jim Rice was the 4th hall of famer who played out his career with the Red Sox, following in the footsteps of Bobby Doerr, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski.
