Why is it that shopping for your mum, your sister your best friend is so much easier than shopping for dad, brothers and even boyfriends? If a female colleague is leaving there are always volunteers to go shopping for the gift, but if the departing co-worker is a man you have to draw straws.
I grew up in a male dominated environment, so Christmas shopping seemed like a real chore. I remember alternating between monogrammed hankies and after shave for my dear old dad each Christmas. And my three brothers learned to love chocolate covered brazil nuts!
How much easier it is today. Not only are there more independent mens fashion stores, but the big department stores have finally realised that men like nice stuff too! The men’s fashion section is no longer hidden in the back corner of the store behind the haberdashery. DIY stores abound and bookshops are no longer dusty dreary caves, you can even enjoy a cappuccino while you choose a book for grandad.
And for the time poor there is a never-ending selection of gift choices for men on the internet. Everything from fine wines to designer cufflinks can be delivered to your door.
I recently had to shop for a gift for a male colleague on behalf of a group of friends. I surfed the web for a short time, came up with an amazing site that sold airline memorabilia — a passion of his. The store was located at the other end of the country, but I received my purchase within a couple of days, already gift-wrapped. How easy was that?
