Owning an Arowana may seem like a complicated process that demands a ton of preparation and equipment, but the truth is that there are only 5 steps to successfully rear an Asian Arowana. Once you have the equipment in place and ready, you can easily have your Arowana at home within a couple of days. In fact, it takes about a day to get your tank ready, then a couple of days for the water to condition.
The Arowana is considered to be one of the largest freshwater fishes that is kept in a home aquarium. They can grow up to as long as 100 centimeters long, so your tank or aquarium should be at least 4 feet long. No tank should be smaller than 180cm X 75cm X 60cm (length X width X height). Any smaller, will restrict the Arowana’s growth.
The next thing you should factor in is the tank’s background color. Black or darker colors are suited for red Arowanas, while white or lighter colors are suited for gold Arowanas.
The height of the fish tank should be at eye level for aesthetic purposes. And you have to make sue you have a solid tank cover to avoid the Arowana from jumping out.
For an Arowana aquarium, a submersible pump is usually used. However, it can be combined with an external pump for better circulation. Submersible pumps are generally cheaper, but because you insert the whole pump into the tank, you are sacrificing aesthetics as well as space… but it gets the job done. On the other hand, external pumps are more powerful but require a larger space outside the tank.
