Erecting A Zip Wire For Your Children
Many people have had fun riding on a zip wire at adventure parks and play grounds. It is also perfectly possible to buy a zip wire to install in your own garden, providing you have the space and are aware of the safety considerations.
A zip wire or zip line, sometimes known as a flying fox or an aerial runway, is essentially a strong cable with a special trolley and harness fixed between two tall trees or posts. The fun is launching from one end to the other, either at speed, or in the case of younger children, just slowly.
It is not necessary to have a particularly large garden, or even a sloping garden, as the zip wire can be put up between two trees or posts of the same height. By allowing the wire to sag a little, children can shoot down the wire at speed, but then be slowed and slip back to the lowest point.
When we say children, we mean adults as well, with a childish sense of fun. Zip wires should be specified for weights in excess of the people who are using it. One I have seen is for domestic use and certainly good enough for up to 16 stone in weight.
It should be possible to buy a good quality zip wire – perhaps over 66 feet (20 metres) – for less than £80-£90 ($120). This is likely to include a durable wire cable (probably 3 mm or more) and all the fittings.
Setting up such a zip wire should be done carefully and carried out by adults. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully! A good safety tip is to make sure that there are no awkward stones or rough patches underneath the cable.
It goes without saying that children should not use one of these toys without supervision, but it might not be so obvious that no one should use them alone. That said, these are sure to be more fun used in a group.
If you have the opportunity, you can put one of these over a pool of pond (if it’s deep enough). Ensure everyone can swim and you’re likely to get wet, have fun and feel good for the rest of the day.
Zip wires are available from many retailers. Given the nature of the equipment and the fact that you want to make sure it is safe, it is best to buy a new one.
