Tan Black
I was told that black and tan dogs have a greater chance of getting parvo.?
Does anyone know how true this is. I was planning on getting a black and tan coon hound and need to know how true this is. Either way, it will still get it’s shots for everything, I’m just curious. Thank you for every one who helps out with this.
Some breeds have an immune system that does not deal well with the parvo virus – Rottweilers being one of them. And since Rotties are black and tan, that may be where this “information” may have started. Do research on the B & T coonhound health issues. You should be able to find information relating to their issues regarding parvo. I don’t know myself, but will be researching that question here shortly as I would like to know also : ). (It may be a “cross linking” genetic issue.)
PS: I love Black and Tan Coonhounds! Just keep in mind that these dogs are powerful, stubborn, and need plenty of exercise. But they are loving and loyal animals.
ADDENDUM: See site/article below. Also, research other breed susceptible to parvo virus articles. Yes, there is a breed genetic predisposition to being more susceptible to this disease. I personally know Rottweiler and Doberman breeders/handlers that are quite aware of this dilemma and take extreme precaution with there animals. I also was a vet assistant and showed Chows, which has put me in the “inner circle” of those with this knowledge base.
Affected Animals:
Dogs. Doberman pinschers, rottweilers, pit bulls, English springer spaniels, and Labrador retrievers are especially susceptible.
