How would I solve this geometric equation?
Using 3.14 for pi: To make a pencil holder, Maia tied pieces of colored string around the outside of a cylindrical can 4 in. in diameter and 6 in. high. The string was 1/12 in. in diameter. Maria used 1 in. of string to tie each knot. How much string did she use if she covered the entire outside of the can with circles of string?
We need 72 pieces of colored string to cover the cylinder of 6 in height
because (1/12)*72 = 6. The circumference of the cylinder is pi * diameter = 3.14 * 4 = 12.56 in.
So she needs 12.56 * 72 = 904.32 in of string for covering the cylinder. For tying the 72 knots she needs 72 in of string. So she needs a total of
904.32 + 72 = 976.32 in of colored string.
