Popularity of Wallet
Along with the wristwatch, the wallet is the most popular male accessory by far, and has remained so since hats went out of fashion. However, in recent years, the wallet has experienced a surge of popularity among the fairer sex as well, because of their smaller size and ease of carry. Some women carry purses with wallets tucked inside of them. While purses contain an assortment of things that a woman cannot do without – lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, and mirror – wallets, in such cases, are exclusively used to carry cash, cards, proof of identification and other important documents.
Wallets come in all shapes and sizes, with one folds or more, and in different materials as well. Some of the more popular types are:
1. Breast wallet – also called “secretary wallet” or “passage wallet”, it stores unfolded bills. Being too large to fit into a trouser pocket, it’s intended for a jacket breast-pocket or a ladies handbag.
2. Bi-fold wallet – a type of wallet in which the banknotes are folded over once, with cards being stored sideways. This is the most popular type of wallet used nowadays.
3. Tri-fold wallet – similar to the above, but with three folds.
4. Chain wallet – a wallet secured to the pants by a chain. First used by bikers to prevent losing their wallets while riding, it experienced resurgence in popularity with the rise of punk and grunge fashion in the 1980s and 1990s.
5. Wrist wallet – a wallet secured to the wrist to keep the hands free.
6. Front pocket wallet – also called a money clip, this type is used to hold money bills. Consequently, it has no currency compartment and very few pockets for cards.
7. Wallet band – a type of wallet that uses a continuous elastic band, made of fabric or rubber, to secure cards and/or cash.
8. ID holder – originally intended to hold identity cards and display them through
Transparent covers, they also hold bills and hence function as wallets.
9. Jimi – a small plastic box intended to be used in lieu of a wallet. It holds five credit cards and three folded bills. Introduced in 2005, it was marketed as “The Wallet for People Who Hate Wallets”.
In Europe, the coins and banknotes are usually larger than their American counterparts. Consequently, European wallets are produced in different sizes and designs to accommodate the larger currencies.
The digital wallet is the latest innovation, and with time, may well prove to be the most popular the digital wallet, also called the e-wallet, has software and an information component. The software provides information security, encrypting the personal information and the actual transaction. The information component is basically a database of information entered by the user. This information consists of your payment methods (including credit card numbers, expiry dates, and security numbers), shipping address, billing address and other information. As more and more transactions become cashless and through networks, the digital wallet may prove to be more popular than its traditional counterpart.
