How do you take Hats on Airplanes?
I need to take 2 Trilby hats and 2 large brimmed women’s hats on an airplane for my trip to Zambia. I cannot pack these into the case as it will damage and distort them. How do you transport Hats on a airplane?
Do I use a separate box/luggage & check it in? If so where do you find these boxes/luggage?
When traveling with just one hat I wear it when possible and take it off when going through security and passport check and put it in the x-ray machine in the box, on top of my coat mostly.
With 4 hats that is not possible, I would try to get hold of an oldfashioned hat box and use that.
(A good suitcase shop should be able to find you a case that is the right size.)
If possible as part of your hand luggage, otherwise as hold luggage.
Or pack your hats in a sturdy box in your suitcase, they do not weight much, but take a lot of space.
Whether it is best for you to check them in, separate or in your suitcase, or as hand luggage depends on the rules your airline has for your route. If your luggage allowance is big enough, and you can check in two items, I would go for a separate item for them, in check-in, but it will need to be a very strong case, as the luggage handlers are not careful with anything.
