The first question to ask is how often will I be wearing a tuxedo? Frequency isn’t the only questions to consider. Will you be wearing it for the same kind of event each time? Why do you need to consider these questions?
If you only wear a tux once a year then it’s probably not even a consideration, you should rent. If you perform and the event is always the same that’s one consideration. If the events are different then you may want to look a little different. Maybe you want a different colored vest, maybe a bow tie instead of a Windsor tie or maybe even an old fashion cummerbund would be worn.
Beware of “cheap” tuxes. Cheap tuxes are cheap. You’ll see specials usually offered by big box men’s retailers. You’ll get what you paid for. Cheap tuxes won’t fit right. The fabric is not very durable.
What about other considerations?
What are the alterations cost to make the tux fit you correctly?
You might get a tux for under $100. Then comes the extras – add $20-$40 for a shirt, add $30 -$50 for a vest, add $15 for a tie, add $30 for shoes. So now you are well over $200 for your tux.
Consider that there are on-going expenses as well. Your tux should be cleaned after you wear it. A Dry-cleaner will charge you $20 – $30 to do an entire tux.
Oh, one more consideration. What about weight loss and weight gain. If you lose or gain weight you tux will need to be altered again. It may get to the point where it can’t be altered to fit, then what do you do.
Owning your own tux can be fine and cost effective. Buy a good tux – most rental shops offer new or used tuxes for sale. Get a black or silver vest and a bow tie and a Windsor tie. Wash and press your own shirt, “fabreeze” the coat between wearings, and be careful.
When you rent a tux you always have a variety of choices. Different events can mean different style tuxes as well as different colored vests. Pay a little more and get a better quality tux, the fabric will breath and allow you to be more comfortable.
Find a reliable local tux shop. If you use them more than once, ask them for a discount. If you become a regular you should be able to save 10%-25% off your rental.
