‘Six Sigma’ is an approach to achieve breakthrough improvements in manufacturing, engineering and business processes. It is a highly disciplined approach, which can mitigate the process variations to the extent that the level of defects is drastically reduced. The methodologies rely heavily on advanced statistical methods that complement the process and product knowledge to bring down the variation in processes.
Earning A Six Sigma Belt
A candidate must undergo the required level of training as well as complete designated projects to be certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt (BB). The project could be real world or simulated. Successful Six Sigma certified candidates demonstrate a strong balance between soft skills and technical aptitude. These skill sets may include statistics, engineering (related to manufacturing processes), process management and human analysis.
Six Sigma Belt Colors
The three major levels of belts and colors are Green belt, Black belt and Master black belt. However, White Belt and Yellow Belt certifications are also imparted:
White Belt
The trainee is offered to provide an overview of Six Sigma. With this certification, you begin your journey toward the professional competencies of Six Sigma. Candidate with a White Belt may serve on any local problem-solving team supporting a Six Sigma project. They can help identify project ideas and can serve as valuable members of a project team.
Yellow Belt
The candidate is a Six Sigma project team member, but has not completed the Six Sigma training. He/she has an overall insight to the implementation of the Six Sigma techniques. Successful yellow belt candidates know how to integrate six sigma methodologies to get the high-level production and transactional systems. The certification helps the trainees to get an idea about the basic tools of Six Sigma.
Green Belt
Aimed at quality enhancement, this certification trains the candidate to analyze and solve quality problems. A person who has undergone the Six Sigma green belt certification has the proper experience in demonstrating the knowledge of six sigma tools and processes. Compared to the Black Belt, the Six Sigma Green Belt (GB) completes only half as much training and a less challenging project. Most GBs work on Six Sigma projects on a part-time basis, while taking care of other job responsibilities.
Black Belt
A candidate with Six Sigma black belt certification is capable of explaining six sigma philosophies and the principles. He/she is aware of the supporting systems and the tools. He/she can demonstrate team leadership, understand team dynamics and assign team member roles and responsibilities. He/she is well versed will all the aspects of the business management in accordance with the six sigma principles. They are trained in lean enterprise concepts and can identify non-value added elements and activities.
Master Black Belt
Six Sigma Master Black Belt certificate holders are six sigma quality experts responsible for the strategic implementations within an organization. The training improves on the capabilities of a black belt. He/she helps the other belts in prioritizing, selecting and charting high impact projects. A Master Black Belt maintains the integrity of the six sigma measurements, improvement and revision of six sigma training materials and teaches the other six sigma facilitators about the methodologies, tools and applications in all functional areas of an organization.
