Cleopatra is the most famous queen of Egypt, also known as the last Pharaoh of Egypt before Egypt fell to the Roman Empire. She was known for her cunning as well as her beauty and, having inherited the throne when she was just 18, followed tradition and married her brother Ptolemy who was only 12 at the time.
Though married officially, Cleopatra led the nation on her own until supporters of her younger brother decided she was far too independent and exiled her to Syria. In her attempts to regain control of the throne she met Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, both of whom became her lovers, though Mark Anthony is the love affair that is known throughout history.
While the history is interesting, many people simply know her for her reputation of beauty and style. This is of course maximised in the famous movie Cleopatra – the original of which came out in 1963 and starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Many versions have been made since and there is talk of Angelina Jolie starring in the next one to be filmed.
